RESOLUTION - Recognizing and expressing appreciation to the Honorable Katheryn Shields for her service as a Councilwoman representing the Fourth District At-Large.

WHEREAS, Councilwoman Katheryn Shields was born in Kansas City, Missouri and attended Park Hill High School and graduated from North Kansas City High School before attending UMKC where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in History, Master's Degree in History and Juris Doctorate; and

WHEREAS, Councilwoman Shields was elected to serve on the Kansas City, Missouri City Council from 1987 until 1994, and from 2015 until 2023; and

WHEREAS, in 1994, Councilwoman Shields was elected County Executive in Jackson County, Missouri and served until 2007; and

WHEREAS, during her tenure as Jackson County Executive, the County successfully launched a $20 million renovation of County buildings, including the Jackson County Courthouse and construction of a visitor center at Fort Osage; and

WHEREAS, also during her tenure as Jackson County Executive, the County negotiated an extension to keep the Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs at a renovated Truman Sports Complex through 2031 and she instituted "green" policies that earned the County over two dozen environmental awards; and

WHEREAS, while on the City Council, Councilwoman Shields championed the 1% for Art Program and an ordinance to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation; and

WHEREAS, Councilwoman Shields advocated for historic preservation and maintaining the character of our City; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor Katheryn Shields for her service to Kansas City; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and tha...
