RESOLUTION - Declaring June Pride Month, celebrating the Heartland Men's Chorus (HMCKC) continuous support of the LGBTQIA+ community and authorizing the City Manager to display flags celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride Month.

WHEREAS, Kansas City recognizes June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month and works to encourage a welcoming, affirming, and safe community to live in. The city continues to actively take steps to ensure diversity and inclusion in City government, create safe spaces, equitable policies and adopt municipal initiatives designed to support the LGBTQ+ community and businesses; and

WHEREAS, HMCKC was founded in 1986 with 30 singers. Now, a Chorus of 140+ singers produces fully staged performances to include lighting, sets, costumes, props, and special effects; and

WHEREAS, HMCKC has a mission that states, "through our collective voice, we build community, celebrate pride, and empower authenticity." Their vision views singing as a means of inspiring the world of love and acceptance; and

WHEREAS, HMCKC is the leading LGBTQ+ performing arts organization in Kansas City, in membership, budget, and audience base. Anyone can audition for the Chorus, making the Chorus a diverse group of singers including gay, straight, bi-sexual, transgender, and non-binary members; and

WHEREAS, HMCKC completes their 37th season with Disney Pride in Concert at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts June 17-18. The concert features Disney's beloved songs reimagined in a celebration of life, love, family, and pride, accompanied by a 25-piece orchestra, and Disney/Pixar animation welcoming all ages to attend; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
