Declaring the month of October 2022 to be Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Kansas City, Missouri and recognizing the efforts of the KC Health IQ Division to Promote Women’s Health by hosting the First Women’s Wellness Fair at Guadalupe Centers.

WHEREAS, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity to inform our communities about breast cancer, making our citizens more aware of resources for early detection, education, and support, as well as the need for funding towards research and better treatments; and

 

WHEREAS, the KC Health IQ Division chose October to host their first Women’s’ Wellness Fair to highlight the health needs of women, providing health screenings/scheduling for appointments, health resources, and a wide variety of activities to focus on the needs of women; and

 

WHEREAS, the discovery that breast cancer is not one disease, but many, makes it imperative that we increase funding for genetic research and treatment; and

 

WHEREAS, a sharp decline in breast and cervical cancer screenings during the COVID-19 pandemic has been shown through the CDC’s National Early Detection Program, which threatens to delay diagnosis and increase cancer disparities in women that are already experiencing health inequities; and

 

WHEREAS, in her lifetime, 1 out of 8 women will develop breast cancer, making it the leading cause of cancer deaths in women ages 15-54 affecting roughly 240,000 women, 2,600 men each year and over 40,000 deaths annually. Every person’s support is needed in the fight against breast cancer; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare the month of October 2022 to be “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in Kansas City, Missouri and encourage all citizens to participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month and;

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy be presented to Taylor Harris, Dinyelle Baker, and members of the Kansas City, Missouri Health Department for their efforts and with the Mayor and Council’s gratitude.
