Recognizing the KC Metro athletes who competed in the 2022 USA Games for Special Olympics Missouri.

Whereas, Special Olympics Missouri is celebrating 51 years of service to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, from 1971 to 2022, providing sports programs and competitions for children and adults, participating in various sports throughout the years, and competing in 16 sports including basketball, bocce, bowling, golf, powerlifting, flag football, swimming, tennis, and track and field; and

 

Whereas, the KC Metro athletes of Special Olympics Missouri  benefit from  free services for athletes to participate in camps, practices, trainings, and competitions at local, district, and regional levels, including programs consisting of Unified Champion Schools®, Athlete Leadership (ALPs), Challenge Days, Torch Run, 8-week Day Programs, as well as Healthy Athletes® screenings; and from the City of Kansas City for use of its parks and sports facilities, coaches and volunteers, as we strive to create a more equitable, diverse and inclusive community for all individuals with ID and DD to thrive; and

 

Whereas, June 5-12, 2022, KC Metro had 30 people participating in Team Missouri for the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games in Orlando, Florida including 19 athletes competing; and

 

WHEREAS, KC Metro won 11 top awards, including 3 Gold medals and Team Missouri brought home 71 medals in nine different sports; and

 

WHEREAS, the athletes of Special Olympics Missouri continue to show that children and adults with intellectual disabilities are able to demonstrate remarkable work ethic, commitment, and dedication earning the respect of their peers and the community; and are true winners because they overcome adversity to compete with courage, curiosity, respect, confidence, pride, poise, inspiration, and faith; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize the KC Metro athletes who competed in the 2022 USA Games for Special Olympics Missouri; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to KC Metro athletes who competed in the 2022 USA Games for Special Olympics Missouri with the support of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for this outstanding event and all the participants.
