title

Declaring the month of September 2021, to be National Suicide Prevention Month in Kansas City, Missouri.

body

WHEREAS, National Suicide Prevention Month is a time to bring awareness to mental health and awareness to death by suicide in the community and to reaffirm our commitment to promoting resources, raising awareness, and fostering conversation; and

WHEREAS, death by suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States for all ages according to the CDC in 2019; and

WHEREAS, September marks the time to recognize the hard work that mental health advocates, prevention organizations, survivors, allies and mental health professionals do to save lives; and

WHEREAS, death by suicide touches the lives of many people in Kansas City. Therefore, we all have an obligation to learn about prevention and share resources of the signals and signs of suicidal thoughts so that we may identify and offer support before it is too late; and

WHEREAS, Kansas City, like many other cities, is starting to move past the global COVID-19 pandemic and is starting to see some of the long term mental health impacts from large amounts of individuals being isolated, away from loved ones, and fundamentally impacted in their own different capacities; and

WHEREAS, in September we grieve alongside the families of those that we have lost to death by suicide and renew our commitment to do better as a community for all mental health concerns; and

WHEREAS, World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10 reminds us of the precious value of human life; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare the month of September 2021, to be “National Suicide Prevention Month” in Kansas City, Missouri; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, Tri-county Mental Health, and Kansas City Police Department Social Workers with the Mayor and Council encouraging all citizens of Kansas City to take part in National Suicide Prevention Month by promoting the education and prevention of suicide.
