Recognizing the month of February 2022 as American Heart Month and commemorating the noble work of Kansas City area cardiovascular centers for their dedication to providing the best quality of care for Kansas City's heart needs.

WHEREAS, Missouri is ranked 11th in the states for heart disease death rates; and
WHEREAS, Red Cross, which provides 40% of blood supply to our hospitals, is extremely low on blood donations, yet only 3% of eligible donors choose to donate; and
WHEREAS, since 1924, the American Heart Association is committed to paving a path to a world free of cardiovascular diseases and with more than $4.5 billion invested into research, the American Heart Association has made an everlasting impact in the nation, the state, and Kansas City; and
WHEREAS, American Heart month is used to educate citizens on heart health, which can prevent heart disease as well as bring awareness to the need of blood donations, with the help of Kansas City area heart centers such as Children's Mercy Ward Family Heart Center and Kansas City Cardiology; and
WHEREAS, Children's Mercy Ward Family Heart Center in Kansas City, a verified children's surgery center by the American College of Surgeons, was ranked as a top cardiology and heart surgeon program by US News & World Report in 2021 with survival rates higher than the national average; and
WHEREAS, Kansas City Cardiology, which is hosting multiple research projects to improve heart health, is also dedicated to the education of heart health through its 'Your Healthy Heart' program and its annual cardiology update symposium for health professionals; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize the month of February 2022 as "American Heart Month" in Kansas City, Missouri; and
