Congratulating Browne's Irish Marketplace on celebrating its 135 years of service to the community.

WHEREAS, when Ed and Mary Flavin, from County Kerry, started selling baked goods, meats and produce as well as handmade Irish goods from their Kansas City home in 1887, little did they know that 135 years later their hard work would be rewarded with a place in Irish American history; and
WHEREAS, the Flavins had a very loyal customer base and that same loyalty is evident today in Browne's Irish Marketplace; and
WHEREAS, owned by Flavin's great-granddaughter, Kerry Browne, and her husband, John McClain, Browne's continues to offer personalized service to Kansas City customers as well as those who drive hundreds of miles for everything from Irish woolens to jams, teas and even items that bring some of that legendary Celtic sprit to their homes; and

WHEREAS, a bronze marker on its red brick building at 33rd and Pennsylvania commemorates Browne's rich history and is also the morning gathering place before the St. Patrick's Day parade steps off, just one block away; and

WHEREAS, live music concerts are a regular feature of Browne's usually on Fridays or Saturdays and recently, Browne's was honored by food critics as having the best Reuben sandwich in Kansas City; and

WHEREAS, Saturday, October 8, Browne's celebrates its 135th anniversary with music, bagpipes, food and drink, and maybe you'll hear a story or two about Browne's place in Kansas City History; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate Browne's Irish Marketplace on celebrating its 135 years of service to the community; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to John and Kerry Brown with the apprecia...
