Recognizing Michael Mahoney's 41+ years of outstanding reporting in Kansas City, Missouri at KMBC 9.

WHEREAS, Michael Mahoney's first day at Kansas City's KMBCTV was February of 1980 but Michael actually got started in television at the age of fourteen, working for a local cable television operator in Ft. Madison, Iowa; and
WHEREAS, later came a journalism degree from the University of Missouri and stops in news room in Iowa and North Carolina, before his arrival in Kansas City; and
WHEREAS, the only reporter present at the Hyatt Regency Skywalks disaster, Michael received the National Headliners Award in 1981 for his coverage. He did both the local and national reporting on the disaster. Other awards include a 1993 Emmy for Spot News Coverage of the 1993 Flood and also has been awarded a Murrow award and a lifetime achievement Emmy; and
WHEREAS, Michael's true love is government and politics. As KMBC's political reporter, Michael has covered every major political campaign in Kansas and Missouri since 1982, including the National Political Conventions and Campaigns. His Blackberry contact list is a virtual "Who's Who of Midwest Politics"; and
WHEREAS, former Attorney General John Ashcroft may have summed it up one day as he left the studio after an interview. He told the producer, "you know, Mahoney always asks tough questions..but he's always fair"; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize Michael Mahoney's 41+ years of outstanding reporting in Kansas City, Missouri at KMBC 9; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Michel Mahoney with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for his many years of services to the Kansas City community.
