RESOLUTION - Expressing support for the Kansas City Streetcar workers unionization effort.

WHEREAS, Kansas City Streetcar workers are dedicated public transportation professionals who provide safe, reliable, and essential transit services to Kansas City residents and visitors; and
WHEREAS, unionization strengthens solidarity among workers and promotes mutual respect, dignity, and fairness in the workplace; and
WHEREAS, collective bargaining provides workers with a democratic process to negotiate fair terms and conditions of employment and to address workplace concerns through an organized and unified voice; and
WHEREAS, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 955 has a long history of representing transportation workers and advocating for improved wages, benefits, workplace safety, retirement security, and workers’ rights; and
WHEREAS, Kansas City Streetcar workers have formed a union and filed for an election that will be held on August 13 , 2026; and
WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to express its support for the Kansas City Streetcar unionization effort and for the streetcar workers’ right to organize and negotiate a fair collective bargaining agreement that will give them a meaningful voice in decisions affecting wages, benefits, working conditions, scheduling, workplace safety, staffing levels, training, and job security; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby express support for the union certification effort organized by the Kansas City Streetcar workers; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Jerry Wood in thanks for Local 955’s longstanding commitment to advocating for workers.
