Condemning the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine and expressing the Council's support of the leaders and people of Ukraine.

WHEREAS, Ukraine is the second-largest country by area in Europe with a population of 43 million, the eighth-most populous country in Europe; and
WHEREAS, on August 24, 1991, Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union; and
WHEREAS, Ukraine is a democratic republic with a constitution and a president chosen by popular election; and
WHEREAS, on February 24, 2022, Russia launched an unprovoked and unjustified attack on Ukraine, invading a sovereign nation and forcing millions to flee their homes to seek refuge in neighboring countries; and
WHEREAS, Vladimir Putin has continuously spread lies to his own people and to the world in order to justify and create a false pretext to invade and occupy Ukraine; and
WHEREAS, the Russian offensive has attacked civilians, children, hospitals and businesses inflicting violence and terror that amounts to war crimes; and
WHEREAS, the United States and nations around the world have united to condemn the invasion and have levied sanctions against Russia, its oligarchs, and its financial institutions; and
WHEREAS, despite the relentless attacks, the people and leaders of Ukraine have demonstrated incredible bravery, resiliency and perseverance in the face of this barbaric invasion; and
WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri, wishes to show its support for the people of Ukraine and its leaders as they face this unprovoked aggression. NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
Section 1. That the Mayor and Council hereby condemn the unprovoked and barbaric invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
