RESOLUTION - Recognizing Melesa Johnson for her distinctive commitment to public service and for her future service as Jackson County Prosecutor.

WHEREAS, Melesa Johnson was born and raised on the East side of Kansas City, returning to Kansas City after completing her undergraduate studies and participating in collegiate athletics at an Ivy League institution; and
WHEREAS, over the last decade, Ms. Johnson served as an Assistant Prosecutor to the Jackson County Prosecutor, a Federal Judicial Clerk to the Honorable Willie Epps, Jr. of the United States Court of the Western District of Missouri, and as the City's first Director of Public Safety in the Mayor's Office; and
WHEREAS, as Director of Public Safety, Ms. Johnson was integral to violence prevention and intervention efforts, working with Partners for Peace, Jackson County COMBAT, the Kansas City Police Department, and other community-based organizations; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson led Kansas City's Multidisciplinary Public Safety Task Force, coordinating action among every City department while working in collaboration with KCPD and our community to address environmental causes of criminal activity; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson was elected on November 5, 2024, as the third woman and first Black woman to serve as Jackson County Prosecutor; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson's friendly smile, legal expertise, unbridled passion for her work, commitment to victims, and dedication to improving the safety of all in Kansas City will be missed in City Hall; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize Melesa Johnson for her distinguished career of public service, and wish her well on continuing to serve our community as the next Jackson County Prosecutor; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council ...
