RESOLUTION - Declaring June 2022 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) Pride Month in Kansas City, Missouri; and authorizing the City Manager to display flags celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride Month.

WHEREAS, on June 28, 1969, the LGBTQ community took a stand for human rights and dignity at the Stonewall Inn in New York City, marking the first major demonstration for LGBTQ+ equal rights; and
WHEREAS, each June, cities and towns throughout the United States, including Kansas City, recognize LGBTQ+ Pride Month to celebrate the courage it takes for LGBTQ+ people to come out as their true selves, build community and promote dignity and equal rights for all; and
WHEREAS, Kansas City is among the leading cities in the nation to take steps to ensure diversity and inclusion in City government, create safe spaces and equitable polices and adopt municipal initiatives designed to support the LGBTQ+ community and businesses; and
WHEREAS, dozens of organizations and countless individuals across Kansas City are dedicated to improving the lives of the LGBTQ+ community; and
WHEREAS, Kansas City supports and will be represented at the KC PrideFest 2022 festival taking place from June 10-12 in Kansas City; and
WHEREAS, LGBTQ+ Pride Month offers an opportunity to learn about the discrimination and inequality that the LGBTQ+ community has faced, and continues to face, while celebrating the work of the individuals and organizations who have strived to create equality for all; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
Section 1. That the Mayor and Council hereby declare the month of June Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) Pride Month.
Section 2. That the City Manager, in conjunction with this declaration, is authorized to display flags that express the City's celebration and support of LGBTQ+ Pride Month. ...
