Reaffirming the City’s opposition to legislation that is discriminatory toward any citizen of the State of Missouri and harmful to the state’s economy, including the numerous anti-LGBTQ+ bills filed this year.

WHEREAS, the City Council of Kansas City adopted Resolution No. 220956 outlining the City’s major legislative priorities and positions on matters for the 2023 session of the Missouri General Assembly; and
WHEREAS, the matters before the Missouri General Assembly deeply impact the lives of Kansas Citians; and
WHEREAS, according to the American Civil Liberties Union, as reported by the Kansas City Star, Missouri has filed the most anti-LGBTQ+ bills of any state; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor, on behalf of the City, as well as other Kansas City stakeholders including the Chamber of Commerce, testified in opposition to anti-LGBTQ+ bills at a State legislative hearing on January 24, 2023; and
WHEREAS, the City is preparing for the NFL draft and the FIFA World Cup and to welcome all individuals regardless of their race, sex, age, religion, or sexual orientation or identity, to Kansas City for these once in a life-time events; and
WHEREAS, the City Council wants to reassure our citizens and our visitors that they are welcome despite discriminatory legislation of this State; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the City reaffirms its opposition to legislation that is discriminatory toward any citizen of the State of Missouri and harmful to the state’s economy, especially the numerous anti-LGBTQ+ bills filed this year, and directs our lobbyists to oppose the same.
