Declaring September 11-17, 2022, as Water and Wastewater Treatment Professionals Week in Kansas City.

WHEREAS, water is essential to life and thus is earth's most precious resource; and
WHEREAS, Kansas City is located on the Missouri River, the main channel of a watershed covering 525,000 square miles over 10 states and two Canadian provinces, making the community one of the most water-secure cities in the United States and the world; and
WHEREAS, the mission of KC Water is to provides excellent water services to ensure health and safety while safeguarding regional water resources for future generations; and
WHEREAS, KC Water employs 64 water treatment professionals who provide 100 million gallons of treated drinking water to a quarter of a million area citizens each day; and
WHEREAS, Kansas City employs 71 wastewater treatment professionals who process and safely return to the environment 94 million gallons of wastewater each day; and
WHEREAS, these treatment professionals are supported by 46 maintenance staff members who repair and maintain sewer mains, force mains, and other wastewater assets; and
WHEREAS, treatment professionals and maintenance crews work around the clock every day of the year, including during the pandemic without a work-from-home option, potentially exposing themselves to illness and often with short crews; and
WHEREAS, by safely treating and delivering water and collecting and treating wastewater and thus safeguarding the health and safety of Kansas Citians, treatment professionals, support crews and staff make an essential, invaluable and enduring contribution to the City and the region; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby declare September 11-17, 2022, as Water and Wastewater Treatment Professionals Week in Kansas City; and
