Recognizing Emily Brown and Free from Market for their unapparelled commitment to ensure people with chronic conditions can make lasting dietary changes, personalized food selection, nutritional education and support, and essential data.

WHEREAS, Emily Brown is a thought leader in the "food is medicine" movement and is the founder and CEO of Free from Market; and
WHEREAS, one in three Americans has a chronic condition where food is part of the standard of care and fifty percent of them lack consistent access to the food and resources needed to be healthy; and
WHEREAS, patients with chronic conditions are referred to Free from Market by a partner hospital, physician, payer, or community-based organization; and
WHEREAS, Free from Market works with its partners to provide users with a monthly voucher amount, so when they access the digital platform, they can select diet-specific foods at no cost and additional items above the subsidy can be purchased; and
WHEREAS, the platform is user friendly and can filter through ingredients, allergens, and any other dietary restrictions or needs, then have their personalized groceries shipped directly to their doorstep; and
WHEREAS, the program measures health outcomes using a data-driven approach, so both patients and medical partners can see how dietary changes are improving patient health; and
WHEREAS, Free from Market is one of 176 recipients and the only recipient from Kansas City to receive $100,000 in non-dilutive funding from Google to help the company continue to grow and address health outcomes through food as medicine; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY;
That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize Emily Brown and Free from Market for their unapparelled commitment to ensure people with chronic conditions can make lasting dietary changes; and
