Establishing the name “Kansas City Downtown Airport - Wheeler Field,” and honoring the legacy and civic contributions of Mayor Charles B. Wheeler.

WHEREAS, the City desires to continue honoring the legacy of Mayor Charles B. Wheeler, and seeks to more accurately reflect the identity, notoriety, and cultural significance of the downtown airport (MKC); and
WHEREAS, the City recognizes the import of the City’s name in regional branding, economic development, and civic identity; and
WHEREAS, Kansas City will host the FIFA World Cup in 2026, and it is critical that the City adapt to meet the needs of travelers and reduce potential confusion ahead of this international event, while establishing consistent marketing to reflect the best practices of the commercial air industry and of our peer cities; and
WHEREAS, the “Kansas City Municipal Airport” (MKC) was opened 1927, and its name was updated as the “Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport” in 2002, on its 75th anniversary in recognition of the former Mayor and his contributions to the City, including the opening of Kansas City International Airport (MCI) during his mayoral tenure; and
WHEREAS, in accordance with Chapter 2 Section 2-10 of the City’s Code of Ordinances, the City desires to establish “Kansas City Downtown Airport - Wheeler Field” as the naming convention associated with MKC; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
Section 1. That the name “Kansas City Downtown Airport - Wheeler Field” be established as an update to “Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport,” in ongoing recognition of the lifetime of service of Mayor Charles B. Wheeler, M.D.
