RESOLUTION - Declaring the City of Kansas City as Southeastern Conference (SEC) Territory.

WHEREAS, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) was officially formed on December 8, 1932, and currently has sixteen member schools; and

 

WHEREAS, Mizzou became a member of the SEC on July 1, 2012, which expanded the SEC conference into the state of Missouri. Kansas City continues to be the center of the Big XII Conference, but is the northernmost major city in the SEC states; and

 

WHEREAS, the SEC has been under the leadership of Commissioner Greg Sankey since 2015. Sankey’s relentless focus on providing resources for student-athlete success continues to make the SEC a leader in college athletics; and

 

WHEREAS, the University of Missouri System leadership consists of the Board of Curators - Chair Robin Wenneker, Vice-Chair Todd Graves, Lyda Krewson, Robert Blitz, Jeanne Sinquefield, Robert Fry, Michael Williams, Jeffrey Layman, Keith Holloway, and the System President - Mun Choi; and

 

WHEREAS, on September 12, 2024, the University of Missouri Board of Curators, during their meeting in Kansas City, formally approved a $250 million plan to improve Memorial Stadium. They were joined along with Mizzou Athletics Leadership - Director Laird Veatch, Deputy Director Marcy Girton, and Deputy Director Eric Morrison. The transformative North End Zone project for Memorial Stadium will modernize the iconic home facility for Mizzou Football since 1926; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City has alumni from every single SEC institution - most significantly Mizzou alumni, many of KC sports teams have Mizzou Tigers and other SEC athletes on their rosters; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare Kansas City is officially Southeastern Conference Territory; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to the SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and the UM System Chair Robin Wenneker with the Mayor and Council celebrating the SEC and Mizzou Athletics’ transformative announcement made in Kansas City and the City will light downtown Kansas City SEC & Mizzou Gold and display the Mizzou flag above City Hall.
