Recognizing June 2022 as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month.

WHEREAS, June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, this is an opportunity to hold a conversation about the brain and share the fact that Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are a major public health issue; and

 

WHEREAS, worldwide, there are an estimated 47 million people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, and without a change, these numbers are expected to grow to 76 million by 2030; and

 

WHEREAS, the KU Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center is one of only 33 centers nationally designated by the National Institute on Aging, with a clear mission to improve the lives of patients and families by eliminating Alzheimer's disease through treatment and prevention; and

 

WHEREAS, part of The University of Kansas Medical Center, the University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (KU ADRC) is committed to creating and maintaining a diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning and working environment that nurtures the growth and development of all our students, faculty, staff, research volunteers, and patients; and

 

WHEREAS, in the City of Kansas City is supportive and engaged in ways to propel research and find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. When more people come together, things are achieved faster; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare the month of June 2022, as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month and encourage residents to spread awareness about Alzheimer's and other dementias along with the different kinds of care that people with the disease require; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Neurologist, Jeffrey Burns, and that the Mayor and Council acknowledge the work of Dr. Burns and the amazing staff at The University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (KU ADRC).
