Recognizing Grandparents Against Gun Violence, now known as Grandparents for Gun Safety (GGS) and their work to reduce gun violence in our community and declaring the importance and beneficial public health impact that increased communication on the health risks associated with firearm ownership could have in Kansas City, Missouri.

WHEREAS, GGS advocates for gun safety, by promoting safe gun storage and distributing free gun locks through their Lock It For Love program.
WHEREAS, GGS’s mission is to work to reduce gun violence to keep all children safe at home, at school and in our community.
WHEREAS, there is a nationwide public health problem of gun violence that is inadequately addressed with current national or local law and regulation, which poses a growing threat to the health of citizens of Kansas City, Missouri
WHEREAS, Section 21.750 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri prohibits any level of government other than the Missouri General Assembly from enacting any legislation related to firearms; and
WHEREAS, the Kansas City, Missouri City Council passed Resolution No. 921239 in 1993 urging the amendment of Section 21.750 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri and the need for more firearm control in Kansas City, Missouri; and
WHEREAS, signage stating health risks of certain behaviors are known to effectively communicate these health risks, such as signs of health risks of smoking effectively communicating these risks to smokers; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Health in King County, Washington State has implemented a policy requiring firearm dealers and shooting ranges to post signs stating the known health risks associated with firearm ownership for patrons to read; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby declare the importance and potentially beneficial public health impact that increased communication on the health risks associated with firearm ownership could have in Kansas City, Missouri; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Health Commission with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for their successful efforts and work in making violence prevention in Kansas City a public health priority.
