RESOLUTION - Stating the City of Kansas City, Missouri’s support of the principles and goals of the Biophilic Cities Network; and directing the City Manager to submit an application to join the Biophilic Cities Network and become a partner city.

WHEREAS, Kansas City has a vibrant and resilient natural heritage, including a diversity of ecosystems throughout Kansas City that provides benefits to our city residents; and
WHEREAS, greening neighborhoods has been shown to reduce crime, strengthen community collection, and research shows that greater proximity to nature provides numerous benefits to all; and
WHEREAS, leading universities, urban experts, citizens, local organizations, and innovative governments around the world are developing nature-based approaches to design, urban planning, and governance that supports human and environmental health; and
WHEREAS, the Biophilic Cities Network includes cities from all over the world whose leaders strive to recognize the important connection between humans and the natural world. Participating municipalities include Arlington, Austin, Barcelona, Birmingham, Milwaukee, Norfolk, Portland, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Richmond, San Francisco, Singapore, Washington, DC, and St. Louis, and
WHEREAS, a biophilic city is a city with abundance nature, where residents, young and old, have rich daily contact with the natural environment no matter where they reside; and
WHEREAS, a biophilic city is a city that works to listen, uplift, and empower the needs of its residents. Kansas City plans to be a champion of environmental justice locally, regionally, and on the international stage through the Biophilic Cities Network; and
WHEREAS, by joining the Biophilic Cities Network, Kansas City will demonstrate international leadership on the environment and local commitment to the health and well-being of all Kansas City; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
Section 1. That the Mayor and Council hereby state Kansas City’s support of the principles of the Biophilic Cities Network.
Section 2. That the City Manager is hereby directed to submit an application to join the Biophilic Cities Network for Kansas City, Missouri to become a partner city.
Section 3. That this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Biophilic Cities Network and local climate activists with the Mayor and Council encouraging all of Kansas City, Missouri, to foster a community that protects and restore its urban nature here in Kansas City, Missouri.
