Declaring November 2021 as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and November 18th as World Pancreatic Cancer Day in Kansas City.

WHEREAS, Pancreatic Cancer is the 3rd leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, has the lowest five-year survival rate of all major cancers and of the more than 60,000 diagnosed with this cancer more than 48,000 people will die from the disease; and
WHEREAS, Andrew Fletcher Edgerton founded the Edgerton.Life Pancreatic Cancer Foundation to continue his fight against this horrific disease while raising awareness and inspiring action and lost his life to this disease on the eve of his 40th birthday; and
WHEREAS, the Edgerton.Life Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, a member of the World Pancreatic Cancer Coalition, has launched its virtual “Light KC Purple Project” (www.edgerton.life) which will take place the month of November 2021; and
WHEREAS downtown Kansas City and other locations around the metro area will be “dressed” in purple lights to raise awareness for Pancreatic Cancer on November 18, World Pancreatic Cancer Day, with purple being the designated color for Pancreatic Cancer and the new “Kick PanCan in the CanCan” Challenge launched to create even more awareness; and
WHEREAS, Edgerton.Life Pancreatic Cancer Foundation Chairman, Barton Thomas Edgerton, and Executive Director, Michael William Coleman, will also present the prestigious Purple Halo Award on November 18; and
WHEREAS, the good health and well-being of the residents of Kansas City are enhanced by increased awareness about the symptoms, risks and research leading to early detection, causes and effective treatments for Pancreatic Cancer; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby declare the month of November “Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month” and November 18th as World Pancreatic Cancer Day in Kansas City; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Barton Thomas, Chairman, and Michael William Coleman, Executive Director of the Edgerton Life Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for the dedication and hard work being done to eliminate pancreatic cancer in the community.
