Recognizing the Parade of Hearts for their contributions to the artistic landscape, tourism, and vibrancy of Kansas City, Missouri and the Midwest region.

WHEREAS, the Parade of Hearts has united the region through an incredible display of community through a public art experience that celebrates the Heartland; and
WHEREAS, the Parade of Hearts set out to commission local artists to create unique works of art on 5’ heart statues reminiscent of the logo of the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues and of the greatness of heart in the area known as the Heartland; and
WHEREAS, over 700 unique designs were submitted to be evaluated by an independent panel and 154 designs by 123 local artists were selected to receive a $2,000 stipend to create their design; and
WHEREAS, on the first Monday in March the Parade of Hearts released the location of all 154 hearts and began placement in all 6 Council Districts and in the region beyond; and
WHEREAS, locations range from Bonner Springs to Excelsior Springs, Platte City to Martin City, and in all corners of Kansas City in places of gathering and historic meaning; and
WHEREAS, at the end of May the hearts will be auctioned to benefit The University of Kansas Health System, the Mid-America Regional Council, AltCap, and The Visit KC Foundation; and
WHEREAS, we recognize the significant contributions the Parade of Hearts has made to the local arts community, the health of the region, the success of our tourism industry, and the vibrant sharing of the Kansas City story rooted in hope and unity; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize the contributions of the Parade of Hearts; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to The Parade of Hearts for their continued advocacy for a unified Heartland through artistic expressions with gratitude from the Mayor and Council of Kansas City, Missouri.
