RESOLUTION - Recognizing the Historic West Bottoms Association for their work and dedication to the historic area, region, and celebrating the Historic West Bottoms' Eighth Annual Heritage Week.

WHEREAS, the area known as the West Bottoms significantly contributes to the historic makeup of Kansas City and serves as a commercial-industrial district that connects the communities of the greater Kansas City metropolitan area; and

WHEREAS, the West Bottoms' history and development are unique and began with trading among Native Americans and the French.

WHEREAS, the area is centrally located and has been essential to the growth and development of the entire Region; and

WHEREAS, Historic West Bottoms Association has partnered with the Asian American & Pacific Islander food festival, Strawberry Swing, 9th & State, the Kansas City Public Library, the Latino Arts Foundation, the Golden Ox, West Bottoms Bikes, and the Neighborhood Tourism Development Fund to host and coordinate a series of events during the Eighth Annual Heritage Week that celebrates the area's history and culture; and

WHEREAS, the celebration will highlight the progress and potential of the West Bottoms as both a historic district and as a commercial-industrial district connecting communities of the greater Kansas City metropolitan area; and

WHEREAS, the purpose of the Annual Heritage Week is to remind residents of the Region's great events, traditions, challenges and potential in the West Bottoms and to re-introduce and introduce the area to residents and tourists; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize April 29, 2023 through May 14, 2023, as the Eighth Annual Heritage Week in the West Bottoms; and
