Recognizing the Centennial of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated.

WHEREAS, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is an international service organization founded on November 12, 1922, at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana; and

WHEREAS, the Psi Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is located in the Greater Kansas City, Missouri area and was chartered on December 19, 1938 by nine educators in the home of Soro Hattie McKim. Duly noted, all Kansas City Call Newspaper staff became members and Psi Sigma made her debut to Kansas City society March 19, 1939; and

WHEREAS, Sigma Gamma Rho's commitment to service is expressed in its slogan, "Greater Service, Greater Progress."; and

WHEREAS, Psi Sigma is committed to continuing to provide greater service throughout Kansas City by hosting services with the City Union Mission, the City of KC Neighborhood Beautification Program, Harvesters Food Network, Sigma Salutes Cultural and Educational Foundation, March of Dimes, Operation BigBookBag, Project Cradle Care, Annual Sigma Youth Symposium and Uni-Tea Formal Sisterhood Tea and Networking Fundraiser; and

WHEREAS, the service of Sigma Gamma Rho from a global perspective includes Project Africa and Project Mwanamugimu. Through active participation in programs and through networking with other organizations such as the National Council of Negro Women, Urban League and the NAACP, Sigma's legacy of service to improve the quality of life for all mankind continues; and

WHEREAS, Sigma Gamma Rho's goal is to achieve greater progress in the areas of education, health awareness, and leadership development; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize the Centennial of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated; and
