Recognizing May 15-21, 2022, as “National Police Week” in Kansas City, Missouri.

WHEREAS, National Police Week honors and remembers law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives in service to others while in the line of duty, as well as those who continue to serve with courage and righteousness; and

WHEREAS, each year, over 150 law enforcement officers lose their life in the line of duty, and in 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. The law was amended by the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, Public Law 103-322, signed by President Bill Clinton, directing that the flag of the United States be displayed at half-staff on all government buildings on May 15 each year to honor these lives lost; and

WHEREAS, the Missouri Law Enforcement Memorial, which holds annual memorial services at the beginning of May, is dedicated to all the law enforcement heroes, past, present, and future, and their family members, who all are dedicated to serving and protecting the citizens and visitors of Missouri; and

WHEREAS, the Kansas City Regional Law Enforcement Memorial Garden, a place to honor, grieve, reflect, and pay tribute to all those who have served and lost their lives in Clay, Platte, Jackson, and Cass County areas strives to honor its law enforcement agencies across the city; and

WHEREAS, each year the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department dispatches a City-wide 10-42 Roll Call of all officers who gave their life protecting and serving our City, which starts off the KCPD’s Memorial Service; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize and observe May 15-21, 2022, as National Police Week in Kansas City, Missouri; and

                      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Interim Chief Joseph Mabin of the Kansas City Police Department, Jeanene Kiesling of the Kansas City Police Officer Memorial Foundation, and Mr. John Dillingham, Co-chair of the Regional Law Enforcement Memorial Garden, in token of the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for many years of dedicated service and of their best wishes for all the years to come.
