Recognizing Thursday, May 5, 2022, as the National Day of Prayer in the City of Kansas City, Missouri.

WHEREAS, prayer has been a long-standing tradition in our nation and still serves as a recurring practice in government including in Kansas City. Since 1775, government officials of all levels have consistently prayed for guidance and wisdom in governance and prosperity for their constituents; and

WHEREAS, the National Day of Prayer is a day in which citizens of all backgrounds nationwide are called on to pray for our nation, its leaders, children, and families. It provides a unified powerful front for Americans to come together and pray; and

WHEREAS, the National Day of Prayer is celebrating its 71st year since it was first signed into Law by President Harry S. Truman on July 4, 1952, later moved to the First Thursday in May by President Ronald Reagan in 1988; and

WHEREAS, we honor Representative Doug Richey, who has received many titles, including not only being a Missouri State Representative, but also having earned his doctorate from the Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, being a Law Enforcement Chaplain (Missouri State Highway Patrol, Clay County’s Sheriff Department, and SBC Disaster Relief), and becoming a pastor at Pisgah Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, this year’s theme for National Prayer day is ‘Exalt the Lord, Who Has Established Us’ based upon Colossians 2:6-7, ^‘Therefore, as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.’ This theme emphasizes God’s people joining His angels in exalting Him as we pray, because He is God Almighty. He has established us in this nation and is working in the heavenlies to accomplish all that He has purposed - as we pray for America; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize May 5, 2022, as the National Day of Prayer; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy thereof be presented to Representative Doug Richey with the recognition of the Mayor and Council for the importance of prayer for our city for all his hard work and dedicated prayers for our citizens and officers alike.
