WHEREAS, the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is commemorated on the third Sunday of November each year; and

WHEREAS, on October 26, 2005, the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly as "the appropriate acknowledgement for victims of road traffic crashes and their families"; and

WHEREAS, the purpose is "to remember the many millions killed and injured on the world's roads, together with their families, friends, and many others who are also affected"; and

WHEREAS, it is also meant to serve as an opportunity to "thank the emergency services and reflect on the tremendous burden and cost of this daily continuing disaster to families, communities and countries, and on the ways to halt it"; and

WHEREAS, in 2020, Missouri recorded 126 pedestrian fatalities, the highest number of pedestrian fatalities in the state's history; and

WHEREAS, crashes involving the most vulnerable road users (including pedestrians, disabled users, cyclists, and transit users) disproportionately occur in communities of concern without reliable access to a car; and

WHEREAS, it is important to remember those who have been lost and injured by the public health crisis of traffic violence, including people like Ariel Young and Steve Hickle; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby designate November 21, 2021 as World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims in Kansas City, Missouri; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to BikeWalkKC with the Mayor and Council recognizing the need to actively search for and support measures to make the street...
