RESOLUTION NO. 210945

title

Declaring the month of October 2021 to be Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Kansas City, Missouri.

body

WHEREAS, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity to inform our communities about breast cancer, making our citizens more aware of resources for early detection, education, and support, as well as the need for funding towards research and better treatments; and

WHEREAS, we do our part to celebrate “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” with the pink illumination of landmark buildings, pink gear on the fields of the National Football League, the BCRF Mayor and City Council fundraiser in order to raise funds for breast cancer research for better treatment, and promote a national dialogue that raises awareness for breast cancer screenings, research, and work toward a cure; and

WHEREAS, the discovery that breast cancer is not one disease, but many, makes it imperative that we increase funding for genetic research and treatment; and

WHEREAS, a sharp decline in breast and cervical cancer screenings during the COVID-19 pandemic has been shown through the CDC’s National Early Detection Program, which threatens to delay diagnosis and increase cancer disparities in women that are already experiencing health inequities; and

WHEREAS, in her lifetime, 1 out of 8 women will develop breast cancer, making it the leading cause of cancer deaths in women ages 15-54 affecting roughly 240,000 women, 2,600 men each year and over 40,000 deaths annually. Every person’s support is needed in the fight against breast cancer; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare the month of October 2021 to be “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in Kansas City, Missouri and encourage all citizens to participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Shontrice Patillo for her work to advocate for early detection and Cathy Jolly for her efforts to raise funds for research through the BCRF City Council Fundraiser with the Mayor and Council’s gratitude.
